It’s Tough Being Black on Tinder, But I’m Not Giving Up
Dating can be a fun and enjoyable experience. However, for some, it is an anxiety-producing task. Uncommunicated expectations, unrealistic plans, and hidden motives can wreak havoc on first dates. Even defining what is and is not a date may be difficult. There is a new term almost every month. Yet the activities may not differ from activities that another person would consider a date.
I first learned about the “Asian Men Black Women” (AMBW) community about seven months ago, when I was on a date with a black girl. Eddie Huang, the chef, writer, and VICE host, writes in his memoir of the time he realized he had been.
Who better to reveal all the secrets about dating black women, than a black woman who has led the interracial dating conversation and moved the needle towards the increase in these types of unions? I created this series because of the great interest I received behind the scenes after I wrote Swirling: After a slurry of media appearances on CNN, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Psychology Today the New York Daily News, plus podcasts, and radio shows, I received countless emails from men who were interested in dating black women, but the hesitation and outright fear of going for what the wanted was almost paralyzing.

Inside the ‘Asian Men Black Women’ Dating Scene
At first glance, Black Girl Travel seems to be like any other American international travel club, just one that caters exclusively to black women. But buried toward the bottom of its About Us page is a fuzzy YouTube video that indicates a wider problem. The video is a defense of the company — directed at “haters” who have criticized Black Girl Travel for encouraging black women to date men in other countries.

Our survey showed that this “conventional wisdom” doesn’t mean all guys fall into this mold. First, we saw that it’s not just younger guys who go mainly for the way someone looks or their physical attributes: We had a few older guys say they were most interested in looks. And most of the year-old guys in our survey say they appreciate a person’s inner qualities, like kindness and intelligence.
